When you're weighing up shared vs exclusive leads, the sticker price is a trap. A shared lead looks cheap because four other tradies are splitting the road, but you only win a fraction of them. An exclusive lead costs more up front and is yours alone. The only number that tells you which is the better deal is your cost per won job, so let's actually work it out.
What's the difference, in plain terms?
A shared lead is the same enquiry sold to several tradies at once, the HiPages, Airtasker and ServiceSeeking model. You buy the lead, then race the others to call first and quote lowest. An exclusive lead is generated for you and sent only to you. No race, no price war, and the customer relationship stays yours.
- Shared: lower price per lead, several tradies competing, you win maybe 1 in 4-5.
- Exclusive: higher price per lead, no competition, far higher close rate.
- Shared leads compete on price; exclusive leads let you quote on value.
A worked example: same trade, two models
Say you're a sparkie and the average job you want is worth $1,200. Let's buy 20 leads each way and see where you land. The numbers below are illustrative, but the shape of them holds true across most trades.
20 shared leads
- Cost: 20 leads × $30 = $600.
- Win rate (4-5 tradies on each): about 1 in 5, so 4 jobs won.
- Cost per won job: $600 ÷ 4 = $150 per job.
- But: you won most of those 4 by being the cheapest quote, so your margin is thinner too.
20 exclusive leads
- Cost: 20 leads × $80 = $1,600.
- Win rate (no competition, you quote on value): about 1 in 2.5, so 8 jobs won.
- Cost per won job: $1,600 ÷ 8 = $200 per job.
- And: you quoted on value, not price, so each of those 8 jobs is worth more.
At first glance shared looks $50 cheaper per job. But the shared jobs were won on price, so if value-based quoting earns you even 15% more per job ($180 on a $1,200 job), the exclusive route nets you more profit per job AND more jobs overall, 8 instead of 4. You've doubled the work on the calendar and protected your margin.
If you'd rather skip the spreadsheet, our exclusive leads are never shared with another tradie, one enquiry, one quote, your customer.
See how exclusive leads workWhy exclusive wins for most tradies
- You're not racing the clock against four other quotes, so the close rate jumps.
- You quote on value and quality, not who's cheapest, margins hold.
- The customer is yours: repeat work, referrals and reviews all come back to you.
- Fewer leads to chase means less admin and less wasted drive time.
When can shared leads still work?

We're not going to pretend shared is always wrong. There are situations where it earns its keep, and it's only fair to say so.
- You're brand new, have zero reviews, and need any reps to build a track record.
- You can genuinely respond within minutes, every time, speed is the whole game on shared.
- You run high-volume, low-value call-outs where a thin margin on many jobs still adds up.
- You're filling a quiet patch and treat shared as a top-up, not your main pipeline.
Shared leads aren't a scam, they're just a price war you've agreed to enter. Exclusive leads are a conversation you get to have alone.
How to actually compare them
Stop comparing cost per lead. Track every lead through to a won job for 60 days on each model, then divide your total spend by jobs won. That single number, cost per won job, factored against your margin per job, settles the argument for your trade, your area and your pricing. Most tradies who run this honestly end up shifting the bulk of their budget to exclusive.
