Facebook Ads for Electricians: Do They Actually Work?

By · Last updated · Published · Reviewed by Muhammad Furqan

A straight answer for electricians on whether Facebook ads are worth running, for a trade that's part urgent call-out and part planned, considered work.

A typical scenario (illustrative): an electrician builds a decent client base from word of mouth and repeat work — rental managers, past customers, the occasional referral from another tradie. Then a slow fortnight hits, the phone goes quiet, and the same question comes up that hits most trades eventually: is it worth putting money into Facebook ads, or is that just for businesses that don't already have a reputation?

Why Word of Mouth Leaves Gaps for Electricians Specifically

Referral work for an electrician tends to be reactive — someone remembers a name when something breaks. That works fine for repeat clients, but it does nothing to reach the person who's never needed an electrician before and has no one to ask. Facebook ads fill that specific gap: putting the business in front of someone dealing with a tripped switchboard or planning an EV charger install right now, with no existing electrician on speed dial.

What Actually Makes an Electrician's Ad Work

Three things separate an electrician's ad that generates real calls from one that gets ignored:

  1. A specific fault or job type, named exactly. "Switchboard keeps tripping?" or "Need an EV charger installed before summer?" gets a click because it matches exactly what someone's dealing with. "Licensed electrician, all work guaranteed" describes the business, not the problem.
  2. A licensed face, not just a logo. Electrical work is safety-critical, so trust carries more weight here than for most trades. A real photo of the licensed electrician doing the work, ideally with visible compliance signage or uniform, does more than a business logo ever will.
  3. A next step that matches the urgency. A call button for a genuine fault or outage; a short lead form for planned work like a switchboard upgrade or solar-ready wiring, where the person is comparing options rather than needing someone on-site within the hour.

What It Costs, Realistically

Budget depends heavily on which side of the business the ad is built for. Urgent call-out work — a tripped switchboard, a dead powerpoint — behaves like most reactive trade work: $10–$20 a day can generate a steady trickle of genuinely urgent enquiries, because the need is immediate and the decision is fast. Planned work, like EV charger installs or full switchboard upgrades, behaves more like a considered purchase: the homeowner is comparing quotes and timing the job, so it needs a longer runway and more repeated exposure before it converts, closer to how a solar or renovation campaign is budgeted.

Where It Doesn't Work

Facebook ads won't fix a business that can't answer or return a call within a couple of hours for a genuinely urgent job — a promising lead left unanswered for a day is calling the next electrician on the list. They also won't help if the service area is too broad to target properly, or if there's no after-hours or weekend capacity at all for the urgent side of the business the ads are meant to feed.

How to Know if You're Ready

An electrical business is ready to test Facebook ads when it can answer yes to three things: there's spare capacity to take on 3–5 extra jobs a month without blowing out response times, there's a way to capture and respond to a lead quickly so a missed call doesn't become a lost job, and someone can commit to checking the ad account at least twice a week for the first month to see what's actually landing.
