Facebook Ads for Solar Installers: Do They Actually Work?

By · Last updated · Published · Reviewed by Muhammad Furqan

A straight answer for solar installers on whether Facebook ads are worth running for a sale that often takes weeks of research and a few competing quotes.

A typical scenario (illustrative): a solar installer watches a homeowner click through from an ad, spend two minutes on the site, and then vanish for three weeks before finally getting in touch — by which point they've already spoken to two other installers and read half a dozen forum threads about rebates. That gap between the click and the enquiry is normal for solar, and it's the first thing to understand before deciding whether Facebook ads are worth running at all.

Why Solar Is a Longer Sale Than Most Trades

A solar system is a bigger financial decision than almost any other trade purchase, often running into five figures, and most homeowners won't commit without comparing at least a couple of quotes and getting their head around the rebate and STC side of things. That means the ad's real job isn't to generate an instant enquiry — it's to get the business noticed early enough to be one of the two or three installers still in the running by the time the homeowner is ready to decide.

What Actually Makes a Solar Ad Work

Three things separate a solar ad that earns a spot on the shortlist from one that gets lost in the scroll:

  1. A concrete number, not a vague promise. An estimated savings range on a typical power bill gives someone something real to weigh up. "Go solar and save" is the kind of line every solar ad uses, which means it registers as noise rather than information.
  2. Real installed systems, not stock panels. A photo of an actual completed install on a real roof does more to build trust than any stock image of glossy panels against a blue sky, because it shows the work is genuinely being done, not just advertised.
  3. A low-commitment first step. A free quote or assessment form is the right ask. Nobody is ready to commit to a system worth thousands of dollars from a single ad click, so the ad's job is to start the conversation, not close it.

What It Costs, Realistically

Solar naturally costs more per lead than call-out trade work, because it's competing for attention on a purchase people take weeks to decide on. A realistic starting range is $30–$50 a day, sustained for at least a couple of months rather than judged after a week or two. Retargeting earns its keep here more than almost anywhere else in the trades: most people who click an ad won't enquire on that first visit, and a second or third touch weeks later is often what actually brings the enquiry in, once they're genuinely ready to compare quotes.

Where It Doesn't Work

Facebook ads won't fix a business that can't turn around a quote quickly once someone enquires — a slow response on a considered purchase is exactly when a homeowner moves on to the next installer on their list. They also won't help if install wait times are so long that momentum dies before the job even starts, or if the quoting process is confusing enough that it adds friction right when the homeowner needs clarity.

How to Know if You're Ready

A solar business is ready to test Facebook ads when it can answer yes to three things: there's a genuine library of real installed-system photos to show, quotes can go out within a few days of an enquiry rather than weeks, and there's a willingness to run the campaign for a few months before judging results, since solar takes longer to prove out than urgent call-out trade work.
